The meeting had just concluded with officials briefing on the sessions said there would be no immediate changes to the region's approach to air conditioning infrastructure despite growing concerns about energy consumption and climate change. The discussion circled around the necessity of maintaining current cooling systems, which are integral to daily life in the Gulf, yet it was clear that the underlying issues were not being adequately addressed.

Almost everything in modern Gulf life runs on the air conditioner. From malls to offices, mosques to cars, and bedrooms: all enclosed spaces are protected by a sealed bubble of cool air designed to counteract an otherwise unbearable climate. This technology is what made the construction of towering glass buildings possible; without it, these structures would be uninhabitable ovens during summer months. Yet, we treat this critical machinery as if it were merely plumbing, a fact of nature rather than the single most transformative invention in recent regional history.

Look at how architecture has evolved. The gleaming glass facades that line the corniche were imported from cooler climates and are now propped up by ever-larger cooling systems to combat solar radiation. We design buildings as though heat is an indoor inconvenience, rather than a condition to be adapted to through thoughtful architectural planning. In contrast, traditional courtyard houses with their thick walls, shaded interiors, and wind towers that draw cool air without any electrical power understood the climate's nuances far better. The modern tower that replaced this vernacular architecture understands only the thermostat.

There is an unspoken justice in who gets access to cooled environments. While those inside sealed malls enjoy comfort, it comes at the expense of workers laboring under harsh conditions to construct and maintain these spaces. The machine that ensures one group's comfort relies on another's discomfort. Step into the loading bay behind a cool atrium, and you immediately feel this disparity: the cold is not evenly distributed, and never has been.

The air conditioner also serves as a furnace pointed towards an uncertain future. Cooling consumes vast amounts of power, much of it still derived from hydrocarbons. As temperatures rise, we increase our reliance on cooling systems, which in turn accelerates climate change, a vicious cycle that benefits us momentarily but carries significant long-term costs. Pretending the machine does not exist is akin to ignoring an inevitable bill.

Designing as if heat were a manageable indoor issue rather than a fundamental environmental condition is no longer sustainable. The solution lies not in abandoning cooled environments, which would be both impractical and unjust given the region's climate, but in integrating traditional architectural principles that work harmoniously with natural conditions. Shade, thick walls, narrow lanes, courtyards, light-colored surfaces, and reimagined wind towers can all reduce reliance on cooling systems while enhancing comfort.

We have constructed a way of life within cooled bubbles and trained ourselves to overlook the constant hum that sustains this lifestyle. Recognizing this reality is the first step towards meaningful change. The air conditioner will remain essential; however, a civilization so heavily dependent on it should acknowledge its existence and build with an understanding that the heat outside is real.
