Coupon Honesty Is a Brand Strategy
A coupon is not only a discount mechanic. It tells shoppers whether the retailer's pricing can be trusted.
Updated

A coupon looks like a small mechanic. Enter code, receive discount, continue to payment. It is more than that. A coupon tells shoppers whether the retailer's pricing can be trusted. If the code appears late, applies unpredictably, excludes too much, or changes the total without explanation, the discount turns into a trust problem.
The discount must be legible
A good coupon has a clear value, clear eligibility, clear expiry, and a visible place in the checkout. If it replaces an apply-coupon box, the customer should be able to remove it and understand what changed. And if it cannot apply, the reason should be plain language, not a dead error.
Retailers like to file coupon confusion under support. It belongs under brand. The customer reads the checkout total as a statement of honesty.
Why restraint helps
Constant coupon noise teaches shoppers to mistrust the regular price. Better promotions are fewer, clearer, easier to verify. The best discount does not make the customer feel clever for beating the store. It makes the customer feel confident buying from it.
Coupon honesty will not produce the loudest campaign. It may produce the second order, which is worth more.
